Bystander by James Preller

Eric Hayes has just moved with his mother to Long Island from Ohio after his schizophrenic father moved away. As the new kid in school Eric is quick to notice who the popular kids are and how the social order works in school. Griffin is the charismatic kid with the million dollar smile, who charms adults while bullying his classmates. He takes Eric into the popular crowd and before long Eric realizes the price he must pay to be in the inner circle. Eric must make some tough decisions in confronting the bullies and learning about the affects of being a bystander. Very realistic.
