P.J. O'Rourke is a conservative comedic journalist who disdains "
treehuggers" or as he calls them "
fun suckers," people and politicians who want to limit motorized adventure. P.J. describes, with an infective wit, his years of blasting around in high powered cars, trucks, motorcycles and off road machines.
Mr. O'Rourke's unique perspectives on individual freedoms is exemplified in his chapter on the
1080 Baja 1000 desert race, run down the brutal Baja Peninsula.
He co-drives a highly modified pickup truck, operated by a heavily financed professional team. In the contest they crunch cactus, squash lizards, roll over down cliffs and generally put their lives in danger. Great celebration follows as the badly dilapidated vehicle, out of the running, makes the checkered flag. We find out that to have finished at all was in itself a victory.
All the stories are outrageously comical. I would recommend this intoxicating book if you appreciate infective satire, enjoy reading about
cars and are in the mood for a good belly-laugh.
