Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare After witnessing a murder at club in New York City, 15 year old Clary Fray is immediately pulled into a world that before was invisible to her. She soon befriends Jace Wayland and his adopted siblings Isabelle and Alec Lightwood, who are Shadowhunters. Shadowhunters are humans who have angel blood in them who fight off deamons that come from different worlds. Soon after she meets Jace, her mother is captured by Valentine, an ex-Shadowhunter who tried to rid the world of deamons and Downworlders (half human, half deamons, such as werewolves and faries) in an extreme fashion. The life she once new and the person she though she was dissappears. Now Clary must find out who she is while trying to save her mother, and help her new friends stop Valentine from returning to power. I read the first book, CIty of Bones for a summer reading requirement, but right after I finished it I wanted to read the other two books. The characters are so unique and lovable. Clare creates a vivid and beautiful world and brings the reader through it with wonderful descriptions. The plot was excellent, it was suspensful and dramatic, but it was not overly done. I really encourage others to read this book, especially those who enjoy fantasy novels.- Amanda M.
