The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman I decided to read this book, based upon the fact that it won the Newbery Award this year. That's the highest award given for young adult fiction, so I figured it had to be good. I was not disappointed. It was great. The story wastes no time building suspense and creating memorable characters. On the first page, a mysterious man murders the members of a family. All but one -- a toddler who climbs out of his crib and escapes to the nearby graveyard. When this murderer tries to find the toddler, the members of the graveyard, all ghosts, protect him, name him and adopt him. He is given the run of the graveyard, under the protection of the Owens and his guardian, Silas. We watch the toddler, "Nobody" grow up, and wonder why the murderer is still after him. We are not sure who Silas is, and what his role will be, but Gaiman has created enough suspense to make us want to know how all of the pieces will fit together. The graveyard residents are all very engaging, and there is a real comic feel to it. Thoroughly enjoyable. Mrs. B.
