Kidd is a teenager with a troubled past. His parents have died, and he has landed in a group home receiving therapy to help with his traumatic childhood. He has found a job working at a beach campsite where he forms a strong bond with the head maintenance man. There is something mysterious about this man and about his connection to Kidd. We also sense there is something we haven't been told about Kidd. He is being stalked by Devon, a childhood friend, who constantly steers Kidd into bad situations. He has been told by his therapist to stay away from him, but Devon shows up everywhere and Kidd can't resist.  Kidd meets Olivia, a beautiful rich girl. He immediately falls for her and feels he must protect her from Devon who seems to be a serious threat. This is a cliffhanger (really), and beware of the twist at the end!
Matt De La Pena masters a suspenseful plot, engaging characters, and a satisfying ending in this novel that left me thinking for days after I finished reading.
