Tricks by Ellen Hopkins
This is a novel about five teenagers from very different backgrounds and circumstances. Each one is struggling with demons that are too real and too hard to handle alone. As each one falls into prostitution, they struggle with their own lack of self esteem as they make choices, and are often disappointed and betrayed. The novel is written in Hopkins' trademark verse style and is often difficult to read because of the heart-wrenching situations. Each one of the characters is searching for love and understanding, and a sense of belonging. The ending is hopeful, with suggestions for how teens can find help.
