My Heartbeat by Garret Freymann-Weyr is a sweet book. It's intense in a quiet way like reading in a soft chair with a cup of coffee and dark chocolate- savoring each bit.
Ellen is 14 years old, and her brother Link is 16. Ellen has been described by her teachers as being "unwilling to form any firm social attachments." Link is a genius. They live under the strict demands and careful scrutiny of overbearing parents, who want to fix everything that they think is wrong with them. Ellen is in love with James, Link's best friend. Best friend is a questionable term, and some people wonder if Link and James are a couple. When Ellen asks this question it breaks open a deeply buried conversation that no else has been willing to approach. Readers watch as Link and James fall apart, Ellen and James fall in love, and the opinions of their parents fall by the wayside. It's not all tied up neatly in end, and leaves plenty to wonder about. Their journey is quite an adventure, and I was glad to go along for the ride.
