Little Brother, By Cory Doctorow Marcus Yallow, and his friends, are free-wheeling computer geeks who play harmless online encryption games. Everything changes abruptly when a terrorist bomb levels The San Francisco Bay Bridge and Bart System (subway) while the"Nerds" are searching for game clues. The Department of Homeland Security descends with a vengence, arresting people who they consider "suspects". Marcus, his screen handle is "w1n5t0n, and his friends are snagged, tortured and forced to sign documents proving their involvement. His best friend completely disappears. Marcus vows revenge against the savagery of a government gone wild. As Cory Doctorow says: "A country gripped in fear becomes dysfunctional, sort of like a body that has an auto-immune system disease, where its defenses go into overdrive, failing to recognize itself and attacking it's own cells." Random searches follow, surveillance becomes ubiquitous, cameras are everywhere. In schools special "Gait Cameras" can identify everyone's individual walking strides. Where will it end? Can Marcus actually fight back against his own government? A government that is changing into a Totalitarian State? Your blood will boil and your attitudes about freedom will alter after reading Little Brother. Mr. Siano
