With or Without You

Evan and Davis have been friends for years. Although they are both gay, they are not lovers. Tired of being bullied all their lives, they decide to join the "Chasers," a club formed by young men whose goal is to rebel against being bullied. They soon find out that the underlying mission of the club is to have members contract AIDS in an effort to gain acceptance. In a parallel plot, Evan has been in a relationship with an older boy, and has not told anyone about it. When Davis finds out, this causes a great deal of tension in their friendship, and when Evan contemplates moving to San Diego with his boyfriend, the reader has to wonder if this is a good idea. The subject of AIDS and homosexuality is treated very carefully and thoughtfully, but the final resolution seems a little too neat, and it leaves us feeling that it is not completely realistic
