The book is about a boy named Jonas who lives in a perfect Utopian world. Everything is controlled and the only sense used is sight, and even that is controlled to a degree. The people in that world can't experience any real human pleasures, or pain. They have been stripped from it all to creat a perfect world, and it works. However, there is always someone to carry all the emotions and memories of it all. Their world is divided by a barrier. The people in the world do not know of, or care of, what they are missing, and they are assigned a role to play at the age of 12. Jonas is given the honor of the most important job, of which is rarely given. He must receive those memories and emotions.
This 180 page soft science fiction is short yet creative, it draws the reader and you can really feel sympathy for the two characters. It also makes you realize a "Utopian" world really isn't perfect and is quite sickening at times without some form of emotion and conscience. It's written really well and was brilliant in the way it was told. The only downsides I can see are the length of the book and its two spin off/ loose sequels don't tie in well until the third book. The length is rather short for this novel and I honestly feel like it could have had a little more going on. But at the same time it was rather fitting in terms of how it really played out. Overall, I'd give this good read 3 1/2 stars.
